The company's ubiquitous "Harp and Hound" trademark was formalized in 1863, six years after the founding of the Belleek Pottery. This symbol reflects not only the heritage of Belleek, but the history of Ireland itself. From the country's earliest days, the harp often provided accompaniment to bards as they sang of heroes, their deeds and infamous exploits. The round towers, many of which dot the country's landscape, were originally built by Irish monks to warn against attacks by marauding Vikings, and were later used as monastery bell towers. The Wolfhound, a hunting hound famed throughout Europe, nearly became extinct in the early 19th Century. An enthusiast, Captain Graham, gathered all remaining strains and re-bred the Wolfhound in the 1860's. All of these icons are shown together on an island that may very well represent both Rose Isle, home to Belleek and Ireland itself. The 2007 Edition Piece features a lucky shamrock on it. Find it and, as the saying goes, "the luck of the Irish will be with you forever." It also bears the special 150th Anniversary backstamp and is personally signed by Belleek's own Naomi Sloan. The Trademark Beverage Mug will only be produced during 2007. |
